Safe & Sound

An innovative new product to help babies sleep - wherever and whenever

Solvej Biddle, of Biddle Innovations Ltd, (and a former client of mine) has created the Safe&Sound™ Cot Canopy™. An innovative new sleep canopy that helps parents to ensure that their little ones get the sleep that they need.

Many babies and children need a darkened environment in order to sleep. It is currently almost impossible to create that environment out of home – at a friend’s house, in a hotel room, at a nursery or crèche or with a babysitter- without the little one having a room of their own; an impractical and expensive option.

Blackout blinds only provide a partial solution. They block out all the light in a room, so whilst the child gets the darkness that they need, everyone else in the room is left in the dark. The Safe&Sound™ Cot Canopy™ offers a more practical and tailored solution. Whilst the child enjoys their own personal darkened environment, those around them can have the lights on or the curtains open.

The canopy has been designed with travel in mind so is easy to carry around and even easier to put up and take down. attaches to the top of most standard cots and travel cots, whatever the make, model, or age*.Its unique ‘Let Us Sleep’™ fabric is lightweight and breathable and creates an instant night time feeling wherever, whenever. The Safe&Sound™ Cot Canopy™ has been designed to ensure easy access to the infant and gives parents the opportunity to customise the level of darkness as appropriate for the child.
The Safe&Sound™ Cot Canopy™ is the first of a range of sleep canopies and will soon be followed by the ‘Car Seat Canopy’™ which will allow parents to create the darkened environment whenever their child is in his/her seat: in the car, on a plane, out and about.
They are also developing a canopy to go over baby bassinettes to help little ones to sleep on planes. I really think this is going to be a very popular product-not just away from home, but at home too. It’s fine if your little one sleeps like a log in a light room, but many find it difficult to go to sleep, and usually wake up much earlier unless it’s dark.
I often hear the argument about not getting your children ‘addicted’ to sleeping in the dark, so you can’t travel. Let’s face it though, the majority of the time we’re at home, so that’s where I want my child to sleep the best. A product like this means you can have your cake AND eat it…. I’m all for that!!!
Wishing Solvej and her team much sucess with her exciting new product!

Fantastic (and much needed!) Family Holiday!

Last week we arrived home from our first proper little family holiday, and I’d definitely recommend it. We went on a Club Med package in the Mediterranean (they do worldwide though). The atmosphere and facilities for babies and children were fantastic. Easy access to steam sterilisers, microwaves and freshly prepared baby and toddler food. I’m going there for a couple of months when our next baby is 6 months old-save making all the purees! There were more than a couple of families there with very tiny newborns (admittedly all second or third babies)- mum breastfeeding happily on a sunlounger while dad played with the toddler in the pool. Poppy had a fantastic time swimming and loved playing with all the other children. Best of all though was the Petit Club. She only needed a little persuasion to go along the first time, and soon got to know everybody. She went along every morning to do craft activities and other games, then joined us for a swim after lunch. They did a 90 minute club session in the evenings while parents had dinner in peace which was a real bonus. Oh well, lots of work to do before the next hol-better get on with it!

Babyconfidence Course

It’s finally all happening! The new babyconfidence full course is starting next month. I have designed the course to most fully meet the needs of mums to be, and new mums.

The course consists of three classes at weekly intervals, before the birth. These sessions cover breastfeeding, what babies are really like, what they need and don’t need and the secrets of ‘newborn management’ . There’s time each week to stay for a chat and a drink with the others in the group, the support and friendship of other new mums is invaluable.

Once baby arrives, included in the course is some phone consultation time-I can be on the end of the phone for support, reassurance and advice in those early days. Home visits or clinic visits are an option too if you need it.

The post-natal section of the course kicks in after your first month at home. In this section of the course the classes run monthly, and are designed to support and guide you through your baby’s early months. I cover general development, establishing feeding and sleeping patterns, starting & maintaining a routine and much more! There will be a nanny at each class to lend a hand with the babies so that you can relax and participate in the session.

Coming soon are courses on Caring For a Sick Baby and Baby Life Support

TV Presenter Kate Garraway Breastfeeding a Calf!!

Not what I imagined as my second post, but there you go!

Other People’s Breastmilk  goes out on Sep 9th on Channel 4. It is to explore situations where women donate their milk for other babies, directly or via a Milk Donor Bank. It will also feature sisters who feed one anothers babies!

Why are we uncomfortable about a baby being fed  human milk from a woman who is not the baby’s mother, when most of us drink milk from another species entirely!

Mums often ask me what used to happen when mothers were unable to breastfeed? If you were wealthy, you hired a nursemaid or wet nurse to feed your baby her breastmilk. The less well off may well have fed babies within the extended family. By the way, I don’t think this is part of the job description of today’s maternity nurse, but you’d better check (joking!).

Looking forward to seeing the programme!

Vicki’s First Post!

Hi everyone,

I can’t believe the new babyconfidence is now getting off the ground!!

Most people know I’m SO much more use around babies than computers, so it’s thanks to my sister this blog has been born!

I’m busier than ever at the moment, there are so many babies arriving at the moment! What was happening 40 weeks ago?-uummm, early December! Was it a cold week ?

I am really looking forward to my first babyconfidence  course starting at the end of September. We’re now in Earlsfield, so really easy to get to, and we’ve a lovely space for the classes and a new clinic room for private consultations. I’m also going to be doing Starting Solids classes and loads of other things in the near future.

But it’s not all about babyconfidence on the blog! I’ll be keeping you up to date with relevant news and developments on breastfeeding, babies health, development etc. I’ve seen loads of fantastic new products out lately too so look out for some reviews.
